Shaping

Written by myself and NK9 Dog Training & Behaviour Specialist

Based on a personal favourite quote from Mary Hunter founder of Portl Behavior Explorer

Shaping

Firstly what is shaping, well shaping is the process by which you can gradually teach your dog a new action or behaviour by rewarding them during each step of the process while learning that behaviour of choice. In this way, you can break up a potentially complicated action into smaller parts that your dog will learn and understand more quickly.

Shaping should only be done in short repetitions, training a dog for too long with shaping can.be exhausting for them mentally and training should not be for more than a few minutes a session.

Through repetition you will be successful in shaping and by doing this in short bursts this will be more manageable and easier for the Dog to learn.

Shaping is a brilliant teaching tool and you may find you shape several behaviours to reach the finished behaviour.

So we are watching our dogs very closely for them offering behaviours that will lead to the reward as we shape the desired behaviour, but we also need to consider that this goes two ways! Why?! Because our dogs are also watching our behaviour and shaping us at the same time, have we ever considered it is a two way road?

They are watching for when we reward whether that be a click or a marker word and they shape us to get a response, human gives food if I do this so I will do it more!

So the next time we are shaping a behaviour think how our dogs are also shaping us as trainers they teach us what works best and how fast we need to reward to shape effectively.

Rushing behaviours will only set us up for failure and more importantly the dog. Take it slow. Enjoy the training and watch your Dog become more eager to train.

Shaping teaches us to be far better handlers, we can adapt the way in which we teach and become stronger and more vigilante handlers resulting in far better teaching to our Dogs 🐾

Or are you looking for support and would like to get to know me better?

If the answer is yes then click the image below to join my free facebook group. What is Miyagis Dog Training Community?

So it is what it says on the tin! Its a community that is international of Clients and Colleagues with the most supportive and friendly people on the planet. Dog Trainers and Behaviourists from all over the world!

Why did I set up such a mammoth group?

I wanted to have a group exclusively for Clients. For support and to meet uo and build on friendships from Classes or One to Ones. I want Clients to see you are not alone with your Dog and the problem you maybe having that you are not the first and won't be the last! I wanted a safe place where Clients could trade stories good and bad in one place for free!

I also wanted a safe place for the Trainers and Behaviourists I mentor within Social Media Platforms.

Why do this for free?

Because when I say I offer an holistic service I really do. It isn't about the money it is about you and your dogs. You and your dogs are all that matter.

So I wanted to encourage people to do homework and build better quality relationships with their dogs. So 3 years ago I had a mad idea and set up the 100 days of dog training challenge. Once a day people would spend 5 minutes plus training their dog. Recording it and uploading their video onto the Community. Every participant recieved a Certificate.

What I didn't count on was how many Professionals wanted to join and how fast word would spread. So this year 2020 I set up a 366 days of dog training challenge. This year people are getting Certificates, Rosettes and Trophies.

Next year they want it again! We are growing again. So 2021 we will be having Certificates, Rosettes, Trophies and Prizes from my amazing colleagues.

We have Clients in America, Greece, Norway, Denmark and Spain. We have Trainers from Greece, Norway, Isle of Wight, America and many more Countries. As well as Dog Trainers and Trainee Behaviourists I mentor all over the world.

So again yes this group is free. It is still primarily for Clients and for people to get to know me but we also have the Challenge running. Again for free. So if you want to join click the image below to be taken to the group directly. See you there!
