Disability Pride Month : In conversation with Tasha Attwood Dog Centred care with Andrew Hale https://fb.me/e/rVVNuEqli Completely free to join the group and attend! I am really looking forward to welcoming my dear friend and colleague Tasha Attwood to the group , to chat with us about working in the dog industry with differing physical, mental and emotional abilities, and working with clients who might also have differing abilities.
These words from Tasha : Disabled people are faced with challenges everyday beyond their "diagnosis" the challenges that people face are being accepted, included and integrated.
The dog training industry is no exception to the exclusion and ableism that disabled people endure.
Being disabled is a challenge because of society and pre existing attitudes and their own image of "disability." Disabled people can and are challenged ranging from annoyance at having to be inclusive and accessible by law, to assistance dog teams being harassed and refused, to being challenged on their disability and interrogated, especially if the ableist individual deems a right to know as they cannot see "their" version of a disability.
Many individuals hide from public view due to their disability or if they can, do not disclose that they have a disability, leading to difficulties in functioning in day to day life to their exclusion. This is draining on mental health and at detriment to the individual hiding by feeling the need to put on a mask to be accepted. This is more than a need to feel included, this is for protection and safety of the individual.
It's not just humans who face disability discrimination, dogs do as well, ranging from exclusion from services to much worse, for a simple lack of understanding or seeking education and knowledge on how to support our disabled companions.
This is why Disability Pride is so important, disability pride month is a deliberate follow on from Pride month for the acceptance and inclusion of disabled people whether a part of the LGBTQIA+ community or not, because the pioneers behind Pride and Disability Pride month saw two communities who overlap who have a history of being rejected and worse, by societies all over the world.
I hope by being open and starting conversations about "disability" not being a bad word that we start a ricochet of understanding, inclusion and the freedom to say proudly we are "disabled" or the preferred term to that individual.
