🧠 Behaviour Makes Sense: Activity-Dependent Synaptogenesis


It might sound like a bit of a tongue twister, but activity-dependent synaptogenesis describes something wonderfully simple.


The brain builds and strengthens connections based on what it repeatedly does.


Every time your dog experiences something, billions of nerve cells (neurons) communicate with one another. When those same neurons are activated repeatedly, the connections between them become stronger and more efficient.


You may have heard the phrase:


“Neurons that fire together, wire together.”


This doesn’t mean your dog is choosing to become “good” or “bad.”


It means the brain is constantly adapting to experience.


If a dog repeatedly practises barking at the window, those neural pathways can become more efficient.


If a dog repeatedly practises calmly observing the world, disengaging from a trigger, sniffing instead of staring, or checking in with their guardian, those pathways can become stronger too.


This is one of the reasons management is so important.


Management isn’t about avoiding learning.


It’s about being thoughtful about what the brain is learning.


Every repetition matters.


Every experience matters.


Every small success gives the brain another opportunity to build pathways that support confidence, emotional regulation, and resilience.


So if today’s achievement was simply your dog noticing another dog and then choosing to sniff the grass…


Celebrate it.


The brain certainly will.


Behaviour makes sense. The brain is always trying to protect, predict, or learn.
