Tiny Toxins: ZZ Plant
🌱 Tiny Toxins: Paws Off Plants The ZZ Plant is loved because it thrives on neglect. Unfortunately, it can still cause problems if chewed by dogs due to the calcium oxalate crystals contained within the plant. Knowledge doesn’t need to create fear—it simply helps us make informed choices. #dogs #dogsafety #tinytoxins #plants #dogtraining

Gentle Reminder: Compare Backwards
It’s easy to compare your dog to the dog you hoped for. The dog you imagined. The dog you see online. Today, try something different. Compare your dog to who they were six months ago. Compare them to where they started. Growth becomes much easier to see when we stop measuring ourselves against perfection. #dogs #dogeducation #dogpsychology #dogbehaviour #dogtraining #cookiepushersunited #gentlereminder

Heat Without Shame No 6
Shade Doesn’t Mean Cool Shade helps. But shade is not air conditioning. If it’s 28°C outside, it may still be 28°C in the shade. Watch your dog. Not just the weather app. We often hear: “But we stayed in the shade.” Shade can reduce direct sun exposure, but it doesn’t remove heat and humidity. Watch for: 🐾 Excessive panting 🐾 Slowing down 🐾 Seeking water 🐾 Lying down frequently 🐾 Refusing to continue Your dog may be telling you they’re too hot long before heatstroke occu

Lower Your Expectations
Not every day needs to be a training day. Some days are survival days. Some days are recovery days. Some days are simply “we got through it” days. If your dog is struggling today, consider lowering the bar. Maybe success looks like: • one calm choice • one successful recall • one settled nap • one trigger managed well Progress isn’t only measured by what your dog achieves. Sometimes it’s measured by what they no longer need to cope with. Small wins are still wins.

Finding Glimmers. Part One: When the World Feels Too Loud
A Feral Behaviourist series exploring nervous systems, hope, and the human–dog bond Sometimes it can feel as though the world is closing in. The political climate feels relentless. Heatwaves are becoming more frequent, the weather feels increasingly unpredictable, and for many guardians, fireworks are already on the horizon. If you share your life with a reactive dog, even your usual routines may no longer feel like the refuge they once were. During hot weather, everyone head

Tiny Toxins: Snake Plant
🌿 Tiny Toxins: Paws Off Plants Snake Plants are one of the most common houseplants in the UK. While they are generally considered only mildly toxic, they can still cause vomiting, diarrhoea, and drooling if eaten. Sometimes keeping our dogs safe is simply about knowing what’s in our homes. #dogs #dogsafety #tinytoxins #plants #dogtraining

Caring Matters More Than Perfect
Your dog does not need a perfect guardian. They do not need flawless training plans. They do not need endless patience every single day. They need someone who keeps showing up. Someone who tries. Someone who cares. And if you’re reading this post, chances are you’re already doing far better than you think. #dogs #dogeducation #dogpsychology #dogbehaviour #dogtraining #cookiepushersunited #gentlereminder

Heat Without Shame No 5
☀️ Heat Without Shame A missed walk is not neglect. Dogs need: 🐾 Sleep 🐾 Recovery 🐾 Enrichment 🐾 Food 🐾 Water 🐾 Safety One hot day indoors won’t undo your training. Many guardians worry that skipping a walk means they’re failing their dog. You’re not. A day of scent games, enrichment, scatter feeding, chew items, training games, and naps can be exactly what your dog needs. Safety isn’t laziness. It’s care. #dogs #heatwithoutshame #dogsafety #dogwelfare #dogtraining

Give Them a Sniff Minute
We spend a lot of time teaching dogs to pay attention to us. Sometimes it’s equally important to let them pay attention to their world. Today, try giving your dog one uninterrupted minute to investigate a scent. No cues. No rushing. No agenda. Just a minute to gather information in the way dogs do best. Sniffing can help dogs decompress, process their environment, and engage their brains in ways that many traditional exercises cannot. One minute isn’t much. But sometimes one

Tiny Toxins: Aloe Vera
Aloe Vera 🌵 Tiny Toxins: Paws Off Plants Aloe Vera is often associated with healing, but it’s worth remembering that not everything safe for humans is safe for dogs. The yellow latex layer beneath the leaf skin can cause digestive upset if consumed. Many dogs never show any interest in plants, but for puppies, adolescents, and curious explorers, prevention is always easier than treatment. #dogs #dogsafety #tinytoxins #plants #dogtraining

Be Kind Advocate Certification
In dog training and behaviour, we often discuss welfare, ethics, and compassion. Yet sometimes those words can feel abstract. What impressed me most about the Be Kind Advocate Certification was its focus on putting those principles into action. Rather than concentrating solely on technical knowledge, it explores how we communicate, support others, build relationships, and navigate challenges with kindness and empathy. As someone who has worked in the dog training and behaviou

Heat Without Shame #3 NOT EVERY DAY HAS TO BE A WALK DAY 🐾🌡️
Warm weather changes the rules. Sometimes skipping training, walks, adventures, or errands is not “lazy”… …it’s thoughtful. On hotter days try: ✔ Sniffing games indoors ✔ Scatter feeding ✔ Frozen enrichment ✔ Calm connection time ✔ Early morning or late evening potty breaks Your dog does not need to “earn” rest. Heat without shame. Regulation before expectation.

Heat Without Shame No 4
The pavement test is often shared with good intentions, but it isn’t a perfect measure of safety. Surface temperatures can vary dramatically depending on material, colour, shade, and time of day. Your hand doesn’t sweat. Your hand isn’t attached to a dog’s body. Different surfaces heat differently. 🐾 Tarmac 🐾 Artificial grass 🐾 Decking 🐾 Sand 🐾 Paving slabs can all become significantly hotter than the air temperature. Sometimes the safest choice isn’t finding a cooler ro

One Small Change
Sometimes we spend so much time looking for training solutions that we forget to look at the environment. A dog who isn’t drinking enough may not need encouragement. They may simply need easier access to water. Busy hallways, noisy kitchens, washing machines, other pets, children running past, or even feeling vulnerable whilst drinking can all influence how comfortable a dog feels. Today, try moving a water bowl somewhere quieter and see what happens. Behaviour often starts w

Your Dog's Nervous System Is Not Trying to Embarrass You
Sometimes it feels like the world expects dogs to be robots. Quiet. Calm. Obedient. Predictable. And when they aren't, both the dog and their guardian can find themselves judged. But here's something I wish more people understood: The dog barking at the end of the lead is not trying to ruin someone's walk. The dog lunging, spinning, vocalising, or struggling to cope is not trying to embarrass their guardian. More often than not, that dog is simply overwhelmed. Their nervous s

Tiny Toxins - Pothos
🌿 Devil’s Ivy (Pothos) {one of my personal favourites} Looks innocent. Can cause problems. ⚠ Contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals. If chewed, dogs may experience: • Mouth irritation • Drooling • Pawing at the mouth • Difficulty eating • Vomiting 🐾 Best kept out of reach of curious noses. #tinytoxins #dogs #plants #dogsafety #dogtraining

Gentle Reminder: Progress is Not Always Visible
Progress doesn’t always look like dramatic before-and-after videos. Sometimes it looks like: • recovering faster • barking for seconds instead of minutes • choosing distance instead of conflict • sleeping more deeply • trusting a little more The biggest changes are often the quietest. Keep going. The small things matter.

☀️ Heat Without Shame #2 🐾 “But my dog LOVES the car…”
Many dogs also love adventures. That doesn’t make heat safer. Even on mild days, cars can become dangerously hot — quickly. 🌡 22°C outside = around 47°C inside a car within an hour. Cracked windows are not enough. Ask yourself: “Does my dog need this trip today?” Sometimes staying home is the kinder option

Say Yes More
Say Yes More Today, try noticing how often you say: * no * leave it * stop * ah ah Then see if you can replace just ONE moment with guidance instead. Maybe: * scatter treats * redirect to a toy * move the environment * invite sniffing Behaviour change doesn’t always begin with stopping behaviour. Sometimes it begins with changing what the dog can do instead. #onesmallthing #dogs #dogtrainingadvice #cookiepushersunited
